Discovery and Development of Health Products - Marine Component Phase 2 Project 2

(September 2019 - August 2022)

Funded by: Department of Science and Technology

This project aims to assess ecological conditions in sites with potential leads for new bioactive compounds, and to establish knowledge hubs by enabling the academe and/or Local Government Units. Our group is in-charge of the ecology and reproductive biology of sponges. Sites of interest include Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro and Bolinao, Pangasinan.

Understanding how healthy coastal ecosystems offset carbon footprint

(March 2020 - February 2022)

Funded by: PLDT—SMART

Our lab will focus on the assessment of management effectiveness in selected Marine Protected Area (MPA) and non-MPA sites in 20 localities in the Philippines. We also aim to capacitate our local government unit partners.

Physiological response of selected species of soft corals in eutrophic reefs

(February 2020 - June 2021)

Funded by: University of the Philippines Diliman - Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Development

This is a recent project of the laboratory. Mesocosm experiments will be done to determine physiological responses of a selected soft coral species in elevated nutrient levels. Like most of the laboratory's projects, Bolinao Marine Laboratory will serve as the coordinating base for this project.

Population biology of corals exposed to local disturbances

(August 2017 - July 2022)

Funded by: University of the Philippines -

The Marine Science Institute

The project aims to characterize the population biology of corals found in reefs subjected to local disturbances and anthropogenic impacts. Fieldwork activities which involve water sample collection, and settlement tile deployment and retrieval are done quarterly in Bolinao, Pangasinan.

Impacts of multiple stressors on hard and soft corals

(January 2019 - January 2021)

Funded by: University of the Philippines Diliman - Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs

Generally, the project aims to characterize distribution of hard and soft corals in reefs affected by the impacts of global climate change (GCC) and anthropogenic factors in terms of diversity and richness. Fieldworks are done in two main sites: Mabini, Batangas and Bolinao, Pangasinan.

Predicting Responses between Ocean Transport and Ecological Connectivity of Threatened ecosystems in the West Philippines Sea (PROTECT-WPS)

(April 2019 - October 2020)

Funded by: DENR Biodiversity Management Bureau

IMBiBE is the implementing lab of the Program's Component 2- Study 2: Diversity assessment of benthic and coral reef-associated communities. This particular component focuses on the assessment of fish assemblages, collection of soft coral and macroinvertebrates in Ulugan Bay, Palawan and along Kalayaan Island Group, West Philippine Sea.
